For those of you that don't know, WallStreetBets is a Reddit community who make high risk plays on stock derivates, such as stock options. It is interesting because these stock options are so volatile that the sentiment on these stock derivates can change drastically from day to day or even on the hour. The community (of autists, as they call themselves) itself is based on a foundation of stock meme's and also what they like to call "shitposts", BUT like a diamond in the rough, some of the autists in the community come up with high quality due diligence and there research actually holds water. How It Works Our process is this: we scrape top-rated comments from top-rated posts on the WallStreetBets subreddit and analyze the content for any stock ticker mentions. When a stock ticker is found, we run the comment through a neural network and the sentiment analysis is performed. The stock sentiment is either positive with a value from 1 to 100, or it is negative with a value from -1 to -100. The neural net uses "bag of words" pre-processing, meaning that word order and sentence structure is lost. However, we find that the analysis is fairly accurate due to the general simplicity of the comments people write on reddit.
We then store this sentiment in our database to be able to look back and compare if the community sentiment was correct versus the current stock price, or if the inverse was the better play. When we highlight a stock on the stock page not only can we see what the general sentiment was in regards to the stock price, we can also see if the sentiment was in the right direction before-the-fact or after-the-fact of recent news, events, or earnings. water. Stock Trends On the WallStreetBets stock trends page we've created three sub-categories of stocks.
Most Controversial: These stocks have the highest grade of controversy between sentiment analysis. This simply means that the forum itself is showing to be both very bullish and very bearish on this stock.
Most bullish and most bearish stocks: These two categories are fairly straightforward. These stocks have been selected as having the most bullish or bearish stock sentiment. These stocks are great for analysis because here we can truly see whether WallStreetBets is the right gamble on these stocks, or, if the inverse WallStreetBets sentiment is in fact a great indicator of market movement. > From <https://swaggystocks.com/dashboard/wallstreetbets/how-it-works>
