NotebookLM
You can store up to 50 sources per notebook, making it a powerful knowledge hub. Create a website using Google Sites templates to share your conclusions. The interface allows seamless communication with your sources, providing AI-generated insights and recommendations based on your content.
Prompt improvements
Base your answer ONLY on the uploaded documents. Nothing else. If info isn't found, say "Not found." Don't guess. For each claim, cite: [Document, Page/Section, Quote] If uncertain, mark as [Unverified].
Instead of "summarize this ask things like "where do these accounts describe the same event differently?" and "which source claims something no other source supports?" or what conflicts appear in the sources
Tips
Split PDF into smaller parts and also convert those to Markdown and then upload those. Better yet in chapters, use extendlm extension for this.
Start with the Index Trick this matters more than any tool. "Summarize" tells the model to be brief and drop the details. "Explain" tells it to build structure and pull in everything. That one word change is most of the win. Here's the full method:
Step 1 - build an index of your sources first: Scan all uploaded sources and generate a list of the main topics and sub-topics they contain. Output topic titles only, no explanations. Use numbered formatting.
Step 2 - paste that index into Custom Instructions (the Configure Chat panel), and add a patience line:
- Research focus for this notebook: [paste your index here].
- Take your time. Read carefully across all sources. Do not rush.
- Cite the source number for every claim.
- If something isn't in the sources, say "not in my sources."
Step 3 - go topic by topic instead of asking for everything at once:
- Explain [topic title from the index] in full detail.
- Search across ALL uploaded sources for every relevant point.
- Build a complete, structured explanation, not a brief overview.
This works best on messy inputs, overlapping PDFs, transcripts, notes from different sessions, where the structure isn't obvious. Now the tools around it.
Prompts Based only on these sources, what important questions remain unanswered? Where is the evidence weak, inconsistent, or missing? Rank the most promising research gaps and explain why." or "For each source, give me: (1) the main claim or finding, (2) the methodology or type of source, (3) the time period it covers or was published, and (4) what it contributes that no other source provides." Finaly you can go ahead and start asking some real question which you want answers of For ex (since you are doing academic research ): Finding Agreement and Disagreement and where experts agree vs. where the evidence is contested
Prompt you can give it : "What do sources agree on? List the points of clear consensus with citations. Then list the main areas of disagreement or tension — what do different sources say, and what explains the difference (methodology, time period, context)?"
Then go deeper to finding weaknesses in the evidence before committing to a conclusion:
Prompt you can give: " What are the strongest counterarguments or contrary evidence to the main claims in these sources? What would a skeptic say about these findings? What are the key methodological weaknesses?
PDF issues
If the PDF is selectable, I would try three things:
- Turn off web search for the notebook if that option is available in your UI.
- Ask a forced citation question like: answer only from this source and quote the exact page or section used. If the answer has no citation, say you cannot find it.
- Split the 288 page PDF into chapters or sections. Big single PDFs can make retrieval weird, especially if the document has repeated headers, footers, references, or scanned pages mixed with text.
A quick test prompt: find the table of contents in the uploaded PDF and list the first five section titles with page numbers. If it fails that, the issue is ingestion, not your question.
Try deleting the source then duplicate the file and rename it then upload the renamed file and try again. I’ve found sometime it sticks.
